He then moved to Leipzig and completed his studies at the conservatory under Carl Reinecke and Salomon Jadassohn. After completing his education he toured with violinist August Wilhelmj as his accompanist, he then returned to the Netherlands. From 1870 to 1898 he directed the Haarlem music school of the Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Toonkunst and conducted its choral society from 1871 to 1881. After 1898 he directed his own music school in Overveen. Leander Schlegel died on 20 October 1913 in Overveen (Netherlands).

The work catalogue of Leander Schlegel contains a symphony, the symphonic poem "Aus Toggenburgs Sage", concertos for violin and for piano, 2 string quartets, a piano quartet, a passacaglia for two pianos, a piano suite, 2 ballades, fantasias and piano music and songs.

String quartet No.1 op.17

In my possession are the autograph parts of the String quartet No.1 op.17 by Leander Schlegel. The work was composed in 1905 and is dedicated to the violinist Henri Marteau, who was a close friend and supporter of Leander Schlegel. The string quartet was premiered the same year in Geneva by the Marteau quartet and later published by Siegel.

The parts in my possession come from the estate of Henri Marteau and contain additional performance markings and corrections, very likely in the hand of Marteau. There are some small differences between the published score and the parts, for example a slightly different ending of the first movement.
