Valeriy Rutter

Valeriy Rutter (Валерий Дмитриевич Руттер) was born 21 January 1924 in Kharkov (Ukraine). He initially studied music in Kharkov, but his studies were interrupted by the Second World War. From 1943 to 1948 he studied at the naval department of the Leningrad Conservatory. After serving as artistic director of the Northern Fleet Ensemble from 1948 to 1953, he returned to the Leningrad Conservatory for further studies in musicology and conducting. Later he became one of the finest and most renowned opera conductors of the USSR. He premiered operas by Vladislav Uspensky, Georgy Sviridov, Alexander Kholminov, Kirill Molchanov, Georgi Muschel or Gaziza Zhubanova. Valeriy Rutter is also well known for his transcriptions and arrangements of several compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich. The two musicians knew each other since their time at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. In 1997 Valeriy Rutter and his family emigrated to Germany. He died on 25 September 2010 in Leipzig (Germany).

In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the "Romance and dance for violin and piano on themes from the opera "Makhambet" by Bazarbai Dzhumaniyazov".

The composer Bazarbai Dzhumaniyazov (Базарбай Сагадиевич Джуманиязов) was born 1936 and died 2015. He was one of the most important Kazakh composers. His opera "Makhambet" was composed in 1986 and Valeriy Rutter conducted the premiere performance of the work. From this opera Valeriy Rutter arranged the Romance and Dance for violin and piano.
