Wolfgang Kubizek
Wolfgang Rudolf Kubizek was born on 13 January 1959 in Wels (Austria). His father was Karl Maria Kubizek, himself a composer and professional clarinetist. Wolfgang Kubizek went for the violin and attended music gymnasiums in Linz and Vienna. Parallel he studied violin at the university of Linz since 1969 and later completed his violin studies at the university in Vienna. In 1975 Wolfgang Kubizek won the composition competition "Jugend musiziert" (which is only open for students). In the 1980s he received several scholarships to continue and complete his studies.
Wolfgang Kubizek then started a career as a violinist and composer. He did not only perform in classical music, but also was a member in different jazz ensembles. In 1985 his composition "Octet for jazz ensemble" was the Austrian contribution to the Rostrum of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). In 1992 Wolfgang Kubizek was composer in residence for the St. Gallen festival and in 1996 he co-founded the Janus Ensemble, an orchestra specialised in contemporary music. Since 1999 he lectured at different adult education centers in Burgenland.
Wolfgang Kubizek died on 7 June 2008 in Vienna (Austria).
Bachen-Quartett
In my possession is the copy of the autograph manuscript of the "Bachen-Quartett" for 2 violins, viola and cello. The work was composed in 1975 and therefore is one of the earliest compositions of Wolfgang Kubizek. Although only a copy this manuscript is quite interesting because I found no information about this work in his catalogue and so it might be unknown so far. The composition consists of the movements: 1. Bachens, 2. Brigitta, 3. Zwillinge, 4. Idung.
