Augustin Kubizek
Augustin Kubizek was born on 15 October 1918 in Vienna (Austria). His father was the composer and kapellmeister August Kubizek. That fact might have been the reason for his musical interest and talent, but for sure was the reason for all the problems in his musical education. The father August Kubizek could not find a work as a musician after World War I and for that reason had to opt for a profession as a municipal clerk. A fact he could never get over for the rest of his life. Therefore the father did not allow a musical education and career and requested a "proper" profession instead.
So Augustin Kubizek enrolled at a teachers training course in Linz in 1937 to become a normal teacher. Bur secretly he took private music lessons with Franz Xaver Müller, a renowned composer who lectured in Linz. These first musical steps were cut short due to the outbreak of World War II. Augustin Kubizek was drafted for military service, git into American war captivity and was released in 1946. He returned to Eferding, his hometown, and worked as a regular teacher. Since 1952 he started to attend music lectures as a guest student at the university in Vienna and in 1954 finally quit is job as a teacher, moved to Vienna and enrolled at the university to study music exclusively. Augustin Kubizek studied under Alfred Uhl (composition), Reinhold Schmid (choral conducting) and Hans Swarowsky (conducting). He also took courses with Paul Hindemith, Johann Nepomuk David and Herbert Karajan. His musical studies ended in 1956 at the age of 38!
After his studies Augustin Kubizek immediately got a position as a lecturer at the university in Vienna. He continued to teach there over the years and finally became a professor for composition. Beside this activity he founded the "Wiener Schütz-Kantorei" in 1965 and conducted the ensemble for 11 years. August Kubizek was also a board member of the Austrian Composer's Society and the Austrian performance rights and collecting society AKM.
Augustin Kubizek died on 24 March 2009 in Vienna (Austria).
The work catalogue of Augustin Kubizek contains an opera, a symphony, concertos for clarinet, cello and viola, orchestral music, an oboe sonata, a guitar sonata, different trios and other chamber music. But the main emphasis is placed on vocal and especially choral music.
Augustin Kubizek Archive
In my possession is a large part of the musical estate of the composer Augustin Kubizek which was offered at a German auction house in October 2025. This archive does not contain manuscripts to all the compositions of Augustin Kubizek, some are located at the Austrian National Library or at unknown locations. To get an overview about the inventory of my archive I created the following finding aid:
