Herbert Schultz

Herbert Schultz was born on 20 January 1911 in Duisburg (Germany). He studied music in Duisburg, Cologne and Sondershausen and completed his studies around 1935. Herbert Schultz first earned a living as a music journalist and made his first steps as a composer. Several of his chamber compositions received premieres in the time between 1934 and 1938. In 1938 Herbert Schultz also started to work as a lecturer in Krefeld.
But the outbreak of World War II changed everything for Herbert Schultz. He was drafted for military service, fought in France, Russia and Italy (Monte Cassino) and finally got in American war captivity. After his release in 1945 Herbert Schultz went back to Sondershausen and tried to reopen the conservatory with other staff and students.
In 1949 Herbert Schultz received a call from the conservatory in Erfurt and fulfilled there the position of a department head. But the political situation forced him to escape in the Western part of Germany in 1951. He moved back to Duisburg and first worked as a music critic, but in 1952 became set director at the German broadcasting service WDR. A position he fulfilled for many years. In addition Herbert Schultz also lectured at the Cologne University for Music and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.
Herbert Schultz died on 28 March 1977 in Duisburg (Germany).

In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the "Streicherkonzert" (Concerto for strings) by Herbert Schultz. It was composed in 1954.
