Eduardo Grau
Eduardo Grau was born in 7 March 1919 in Barcelona (Spain). When he was eight years old, his family emigrated to Argentina and settled in Buenos Aires, where he completed his schooling and began his musical education. During his youth he showed an early interest in composition and started writing music at a young age. Some of his early works were sent to Manuel de Falla, who was then living in Argentina and recognized the young composer’s potential, encouraging him to continue his development.
Eduardo Grau received his musical training in Buenos Aires. Rather than following a documented conservatory curriculum, his education combined private study and mentorship. He was advised in composition by Manuel de Falla and also studied instrumentation and orchestration with the Catalan composer Jaime Pahissa and pursued musicological studies under Erwin Leuchter.
In 1948 Eduardo Grau settled in Mendoza (Argentina), where he developed the greater part of his professional career. His activities were centred on teaching, research, and composition. He joined the Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts of the National University of Cuyo and later continued at the institution that became the Escuela Superior de Musica. There he taught History of Music, became full professor, and eventually served as Director of the School of Music.
Alongside his institutional work, Grau was active as a musicologist, lecturer, editor, and cultural figure. He published studies and editions connected with Hispanic musical traditions, among them adaptations and selections from the Spanish song repertory, including "Treinta compositores del cancionero espanol".
Grau’s catalogue comprises more than 200 compositions and encompasses virtually all major musical genres. His output includes orchestral works, concertos, chamber music, choral works, sacred compositions, solo instrumental pieces, incidental music, and vocal music. His catalogue also includes choral compositions and works inspired by Spanish literary and historical subjects.
Eduardo Grau died on 4 January 2006 in Adrogue (Argentina).
In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the work "Cinco serenatas" for piano by Eduardo Grau. The work was composed in 1943 and is dedicated to Claudio Arrau. It is one of his earliest known compositions.
In addition I also own a copy of the manuscript of "Preludio y Fuga" for piano by Eduardo Grau. The Preludio was composed in 1940, the Fuga in 1943. The work is dedicated to Zulima Fons.
