Michael Rot
Michael Rot was born on 19 April 1955 in Vienna (Austria). He began his formal musical education in his native city, studying piano, trumpet, and music theory at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität in his early years. Following his initial studies Michael Rot continued his musical formation at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, where he pursued composition (under Francis Burt) and conducting. In addition Michael Rot expanded his artistic training abroad: while living in Italy, he undertook vocal studies.
After his studies Michael Rot began teaching as a repetiteur in the vocal training at the Wiener Hochschule für Musik. In 1987 Michael Rot became professor for musical interpretation of opera. In addition he also worked as a conductor, for example he was the choir master of the Wiener Schütz-Kantorei for 2 years.
In these years Michael Rot also composed a lot of music, for example the Violin concerto in 1995. But it seems that he stopped composing since the late 1990s and more and more focused on musicological and editorial work. This included leadership roles in producing the complete edition of Johann Strauss and scholarly editions of major operatic and symphonic literature for international publishers.
Gelobt seist du Herr Jesu Christ
I am in possession of the autograph manuscript of the choral composition "Gelobt seist du Herr Jesus Christ, Op. 28" by Michael Rot. The work is scored for SATB choir and, according to the manuscript, was completed on 30 October 1975. It is dedicated to Augustin Kubizek, with whom Michael Rot most likely studied in 1975.
This indicates that the composition belongs to Rot’s very early creative period. It appears that he later excluded these early works from his official catalogue: his current catalogue begins with compositions from 1978 onward, and op. 28 is now assigned to an overture for winds, timpani, and strings.
