Hans Czegka

Hans Czegka was born in 1903. He studied the cello with Friedrich Buxbaum at the Musikakademie in Vienna. After completing his studies, Czegka became the cellist of the Mildner Quartet in 1925, alongside Alfred Mildner, Armin Kaufmann, and Max Handl. Two years later, he left the ensemble to become one of the founding members of the Rothschild Quartet together with Fritz Rothschild, Armin Kaufmann, and Artur Kreiner. The quartet remained active in this formation for more than a decade and toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States.
As a soloist, Hans Czegka appeared only rarely in public. One notable occasion was in 1927, when he gave the premiere performance of the Konzertstück for cello and orchestra composed by his quartet colleague Armin Kaufmann.
In 1947, Czegka joined the Vienna Philharmonic as a cellist and also became a member of the Barylli Quartet, an ensemble formed by musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 1950, Hans Czegka underwent surgery but died unexpectedly from postoperative complications.

In my possession are three manuscripts of works by Hans Czegka. These works are:

  • An untitled Duo for violin and cello - 4 movements, composed in 1932, autograph manuscript
  • An untitled Duo for violin and cello - 3 movements, undated, autograph manuscript
  • Rumänische Rhapsodie, for cello and piano - copyist manuscript, dated 1945, and signed "Hugo Pyba"(?)
