Mario van Overeem

Marie-Lambert van Overeem, better known as Mario van Overeem, was born on 26 May 1872 in Leiden (Netherlands). On 28 June 1889 he moved to Belgium, where he studied composition with Edgar Tinel at the Brussels Conservatory and won first prize in counterpoint and fugue. In 1899 his composition Bellerophon, based on a poem by Isidoor Albert, was announced for performance at the Conservatory in Ghent. Van Overeem composed orchestral, vocal and instrumental music, including several works for the chromatic harp, such as a Harp Concerto (1905) and a Scherzo for four chromatic harps (1913). He also published numerous songs, including Tien zangstukken, op. 29, to poems by Guido Gezelle (1924), as well as music for organ and harmonium. In 1924 he was living in Etterbeek near Brussels, where he applied for Belgian citizenship. He was married to a Belgian woman and had one child. Mario van Overeem died on 30 December 1946.
