Alexander Rosenzweig

Alexander Rosenzweig was born around 1850, very likely in Vienna (Austria). In 1867 he enrolled at the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde and studied violin. In 1869 he received a scholarship to continue his studies, granted by Gustav Ritter von Epstein. A newspaper in 1870 noted that Alexander Rosenzweig received a second place in a violin competition in the conservatory (behind 1st place Bertha Haft, and shared 2nd place with Alois Bruck). After his studies Alexander Rosenzweig worked as a violinist in the orchestra of the Burgtheater in Vienna. It seems that he remained in this position for decades. It also known that Alexander Rosenzweig was a close friend to Alexander von Zemlinsky, Edmund Eysler and the music critic Max Graf. The quartet often met in the apartment of Alexander Rosenzweig in the Zirkusgasse, performed chamber music together and discussed the actual music scene. There is no information when Alexander Rosenzweig passed away.

In my possession is the autograph manuscript "Quartett (A dur) für Pianoforte, Violine, Viola und Violoncell" by Alexander Rosenzweig. The work was composed in 1892 and is numbered op.5. I have no information about a performance of the work. Maybe the quartet Rosenzweig, Zemlinsky, Eysler and Graf played it at one of their chamber music sessions.

I have also no information about other compositions by Alexander Rosenzweig, none of his works was ever published.
