Thiriet, Andre

Andre Thiriet

Albert Louis Andre Thiriet was born on 14 September 1906 in Tarare (France). There is some confusion about the year of birth of Andre Thiriet, because the encyclopedia „Kurzgefasstes Tonkünsterlexikon“ by Frank & Altmann from 1936 gives 1897 as year of birth. But that seems to be an error. There are modern online references to French registers of birth and death that on various occasions mention 1906 as his year of birth. Therefore I go with this.

There is little known about the further life of Andre Thiriet but it seems that he studied with Pierre Monteux. In the 1930s he was director of the conservatory in Chambery near Lyon. Andre Thiriet also founded a vocal double quartet which ran under his name and was directed by him. Andre Thiriet was married to the harpist and soprano Marguerite Revellin. Between 1951 and 1975 he was director of the conservatory in Roubaix.
Andre Thiriet died on 9 December 1976 in Lyon.

The work catalogue of Andre Thiriet is large according to the above mentioned encyclopedia. It lists operas, symphonic works, chamber music, harp and piano pieces, violin and cello etudes, choir works and songs.

Cello sonata

In my possession is the autograph manuscript of the "Sonate pour violoncelle et piano" by Andre Thiriet. The work was composed in 1940 and later published by the Genevan publishing house Henn. My manuscript has an inscription on the title page by Andre Thiriet (dated February 1941) where he dedicates this manuscript to Genevieve Roche and thanks for a wonderful performance of the work. It is very likely that this Genevieve Roche is a cellist and and the performance in early 1941 the world premiere. But I could not find verification for this. I also own a copy of the printed score by Edition Henn, which provides a few more information that are missing from the autograph manuscript. According to the printed score the Cello sonata by Andre Thiriet is his opus 120 and the work is dedicated to Daniel Fouet.

My copy of the Henn edition seems to be the only existing copy. Not even the Swiss National Library holds a copy nor any other public library. For that reason I publish the score here for information purposes:
