Violin duo

Alban Roetschi (1922-2015): Larghetto for violin and piano (1939). Autograph score.

 

Alban Roetschi was bron on 19 April 1922 in Solothurn (Switzerland). He received lessons in violin and harmony from Richard Flury, piano and composition from Dino Ghisalberti and clarinet from Stefan Jäggi. Subsequently he studied at the Conservatory in Bern under Rosmarie Stucki (piano) and Luc Balmer (composition), finishing his studies in Basel under Paul Baumgartner (piano) and Hans Münch (conducting). Later Alban Roetschi taught at the college for school and nursery teacher in Solothurn and had a strong influence on the future teachers introducing the Orff instruments to the musical education. Alban Roetschi died on 19 February 2015 in Solothurn.

The Larghetto for violin and piano is a small composition. It consists of 4 pages and is dated "19. XI 1939" at the end. The work is dedicated to "meinem lieben Doris". Most of the autograph manuscripts of Alban Roetschi are archived at the Zentralbibliothek Solothurn. But there is no related document to the Larghetto. Furthermore the earliest composition at the archive in Solothurn dates from 1941. So this Larghetto seems to be one of the earliest compositions of Alban Roetschi.

Lamberto Gardelli (1915-1998): Sonata-fantasia for violin and piano (1937). Autograph manuscript

 

Lamberto Gardelli was born on 8 November 1915 in Venedig (Italy). He first studied in Pesaro under Adriano Ariani and Amilcare Zanella, later under Goffredo Petrassi in Rome. He then started his conducting career and became assistant to Tullio Serafin. In 1944 Lamberto Gardelli gave his conducting debut with Verdi's "La traviata" in Rome. In 1946 he became principal conductor of the opera in Stockholm, in 1955 he fulfilled the same position at the Danish Radio Orchestra and from 1966 at the State Opera in Budapest. Lamberto Gardelli was a distiguished conductor especially for Italian opera repertoire and made guest appearances at the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York or the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In the 1980s he took the position of the principal conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra and again the Danish Radio Orchestra. Lamberto Gardelli died on 17 July 1998 in Munich (Germany).

Beside his career as a conductor Lamberto Gardelli always composed music as well. His output includes operas, orchestral works, concertos for piano, for bassoon and for oboe as well as chamber music. The Sonata-fantasia for violin and piano was composed during the years in Pesaro. The autograph ends with the date "1932-33" but on the first page it says "Pesaro 1937". The score consists of 29 pages.

John Luke Rose (*1933): Violin sonata No.1 op.28 (1973). Fair copy of the score in the composer's hand.

 

The Violin sonata was composed (according to the dates given in the autograph manuscript) between October 1972 and March 1973. The work is dedicated to Yfrah Neaman and David Wilde.

The work is dedicated to violinist Sydney Humphreys and pianist Philip Ledger, but I could not find a note if they premiered the work. The earliest verifiable performance was on 10.05.1963 with Yfrah Neaman (violin) and Randolph Hokanson (piano) at the University of Washington. Later the work was also recorded for CD by Rotraud Schneider (violin) and Daniel Herscovitch (piano) for the Canberra School of Music record label.

 

John Exton included the following handwritten note on the Fantasy to the score:

 

The Fantasy was written during the summer of 1962, and was conceived primarily as a violin solo. The piano part is neither an accompaniment nor an equal complementary voice, but rather an extension and elaboration of the violin part which dominates throughout.

It opens with a slow, unaccompanied Cantilena for the violin, unfolding the thematic paragraph on which the whole piece is based as a sort of free and extended Passacaglia. Against successive developments and variations of this theme, the piano enters with short interjections which gradually coalesce into a fast, central scherzando section. This culminates in a joint cadenza for the two instruments, and the piece ends quietly with a return of the original mood, now with more reflective interjections from the piano.

Richard Stoker (*1938): Prelude & Toccata for violin and piano op.22 (1967). Autograph violin part and copy of the full score.

 

Richard Stoker was born 8 November 1938 in Castleford (England). He studied music at the Royal Academy of Music under Lennox Berkeley, and later with a Mendelssohn scholarship under Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Already in 1963 he became professor for composition at the Royal Academy of Music and taught there until 1983. He also made a notable career as a theatre and film actor with appearances in over 100 productions worldwide. Richard Stoker composed music since his early years and still does reaching nearly opus number 100.

The "Prelude & Toccata for violin and piano" op.22 was composed in 1967 and first performed in 1974. The work remains unpublished.
